"Golems are beings as well," Earling said. It was so bluntly that Seph blinked at him.
"Excuse me?"
"Golems are beings as well," the passerine man repeated, and the feathers of his nape raised slightly, revealing the flushed orange-red undersides.
"I...didn't say they weren't," Seph said, carefully. He glanced at Rook, who stared back at him with one eye. Her feathers raised as well, though less than his, and she was emitting the slightest clicking noise; these gestures he took to mean that she was uncertain, but not necessarily as angry as Earling, who continued with abrasively.
"If you presume them beings, then why do you possess a piece of one as if it were a tok-ken?" he demanded. He jabbed his neck forward, gesturing at Seph's pocket with his beak, and Seph quickly reached back.
"Oh — you mean — Gavra's facepiece? This is noth — well, it's not nothing, it's just that the gol — Gavra gave this to me. Himself, on purpose. I use it — well, I usually use it to manage the store, but obviously I didn't quite get around to doing that today."
If they were affected by his pointed voice, it didn't seem so; instead both their heads tilted, in exactly the same direction and angle. They regarded each other with their eyes and a roll of their wings, looking more contemplative than offended.
